Everett 5, Seattle 2

Posted at 12:01 am by Nick Patterson

TALKING POINTS

Well, how about Kyle Beach? When players return from NHL camps, you always have to wonder how they're going to react in their first game back. In past years Everett players have struggled upon returning from camps. But leave it to Beach to change that trend. He scored just 54 seconds into his first game back, added another late in the game to seal it, and also laid Everett's most dramatic hit of the season thus far. He was even on his best behavior, taking just one penalty -- and that came when the officials decided taking punches to the head somehow constituted roughing.

The Tips put Beach on a line with Daniel Bartek and Kellan Tochkin, and it looks like Everett might have something going. That line combined for four goals and four assists and always looked dangerous.

Otherwise, it wasn't a particularly impressive performance by the Tips. Everett got hemmed into its own zone for long stretches, and the Tips nearly squandered an early 3-0 lead. But Shayne Barrie has a solid effort in net for the Tips to help compensate.

TURNING POINT

It didn't take long for Beach to set the tone. Just 54 seconds in, with the teams playing four-on-four, Seattle goalie Jacob DeSerres lost Bartek's shot in his pads, and Beach reached in and poked it through to stake the Tips to a dream start.

HIT OF THE DAY

Midway through the first period with the Tips on the penalty kill, Beach lined up Stefan Warg, sending the Seattle defenseman head over heels into his own bench.

THREE STARS

First star: Bartek. Two goals and two assists, an incredibly efficient performance tonight.

Second star: Beach. Welcome back to Everett, Mr. Beach.

Third star: Barrie. Stopped 30 shots and appeared more confident as the game progressed.

The Herald's honorable mention: Thomas Hickey, Seattle. Two assists as he also was making his first appearance since returning from an NHL camp.

LINEUP NOTES

Tonight marked the 2008-09 debut for Beach, who missed the first six games of the season while at camp with the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks. Also back was right wing Matt Ius, who missed three games because of a concussion, while defenseman Paul Sohor got into his first game of the season. Defenseman Graham Potuer was out with a concussion and left wing Tyler Parker was serving a one-game suspension for his kneeing major taken last Friday in Spokane. Forwards Ryan White and Cameron Abney and defensemen Brenden Stephen and Drew McDermott were healthy scratches.

Seattle also had key players back from NHL camps as Hickey (Los Angeles) and right wing Greg Scott (Toronto) both made their season debut. Overage center Jared Jagow has returned home to await a trade, having been squeezed out by Scott's return and acquisition of left wing Chris Cloud off waivers from Vancouver. Center Charles Wells (knee) and defenseman Jeremy Schappert (shoulder) are out injured. Forwards Spencer Edwards and Colin Haas and defenseman Brad Haber were healthy scratches.
