YAKIMA — A proposal to change the state basketball tournament format to single elimination may have picked up steam here.
The 9 a.m. consolation final between Archbishop Murphy and Coupeville was witnessed by less than 100 fans. The Yakima SunDome seats about 7,500. GIRLS CLUB: Nearly 200 female athletes were among the 16 teams playing in the girls tournament. But gender equity stopped there.
Among 32 head coaches was one woman, Beth Campbell of Bellevue Christian. There was a smattering of assistant coaches, three referees, and four women on press row: two photographers, one broadcast assistant and one play-by-play radio announcer. LOCAL ALL-STARS: For the girls, Archbishop Murphy’s Lisa Coate and King’s Rachel Strand were first-team, all-tournament selections. Archbishop Murphy’s Lauren Coate was named to the second team.
For the boys, King’s Chris Faidley was a first-team pick.COVER GIRLS: The King’s cheer squad made the front page of the local paper performing one of their high flying basket tosses.DOME DIVA: The talk of the town was the scheduled appearance of Cher and her farewell tour at the SunDome later this month. START ‘EM YOUNG: An advertisement in the arena for a local tribal casino touted family entertainment with a “kids club.”GOOD EATS: Best food in the SunDome? The crispy cold apples supplied by the Washington Apple Growers. The worst? Not sure, but I suspect a correlation between certain meat products and a noticeable decline in the local squirrel population
