    Stanwood takes sixth at volleyball tourney

    MOUNT VERNON -- The Stanwood volleyball team ran right smack into host Mount Vernon at the Mount Vernon volleyball tournament Saturday.

    After taking an early lead, the Spartans couldn't hang on.

    Stanwood (2-0 league, 5-3 overall) lost to Mt. Vernon 19-25, 25-20, 15-10 in the gold bracket to finish in sixth place.

    "It was a consistency issue," Stanwood head coach Erik Titus said. "We didn't put the ball in play much and they did."

    The victory allowed Mount Vernon to finish in fifth place.

    Stanwood lost to Seattle's Bishop Blanchet 25-19, 25-14 in the opening round of bracket play to set up the match with Mt. Vernon.

    Meadowdale finished in 12th place after losing to Mountlake Terrace and La Conner in the silver bracket.

    Oak Harbor finished in 16th place after placing fourth in the bronze bracket.

    Neah Bay 3, Highland Christian 0: At Neah Bay, Highland Christian (2-0 league, 5-5 overall) couldn't stay competetive with Neah Bay, losing 25-10, 25-12, 25-21 on the road. Neah Bay's record was not recorded.

    Bear Creek Tournament: At Redmond, Shoreline Christian went 1-3 to take third place at the Bear Creek Tournament Saturday. Evergreen Lutheran placed first, going 4-0, and Forest Ridge placed second.

    Girls soccer

    Oak Harbor 2, Arlington 2 (OT): At Oak Harbor, Arlington scored two goals in the last six minutes to force overtime and an eventual Wesco North tie with Oak Harbor. Carson McKole scored both of Oak Harbor's (1-9-1) goals. Arlington scored on a penalty kick and a corner kick. Goal keepers were not recorded.

    Monroe 2, Snohomish 0: At Monroe, Kaitlyn Chesemore assisted on Kaylie Sowler and Alyssa Drew's goals, and Dani Philippart recorded the shutout for Monroe (5-3-3) in the Wesco North match. Snohomish (4-6-0) started Cori Brown at keeper.

    Marysville-Pilchuck 2, Stanwood 2: At Marysville, Tomahawk sophomore Melissa Kirk scored off a Mady Schoonover throw-in in the 79th minute to force overtime and an eventual tie with the Spartans in Wesco North action. Riley Henderson scored twice for Stanwood (4-3-3), an unassisted goal in the 2nd minute, and on a pass from Heather Skeels in the 17th. The Tommies (1-7-3) made it 2-1 in the 38th minute when Krista Riozzi knocked home a pass from Schoonover. Lauren Schoonover was M-P's keeper and Haley Haugstad minded the nets for Stanwood.

    King's 5, Sultan 0: At Sultan, Christina McCormick scored three goals to lead King's (9-1 overall) to a Cascade Conference win. Maddy McDevitt recorded the shutout for King's and Kendal Thorenson and Kelsey Christianson each chipped in a goal. Christianson also added two assists. Sultan (0-11 overall) used Krystal Novak and Emily Dir in goal.

    Boys soccer

    North Sound Christain 7, Providence Classical Christian 2: At Mountlake Terrace, Tanner Mahler scored one goal and assisted on two goals by Daron Otis and a goal by Jeremy Waller to help lead North Sound to the Northwest 1B victory. Otis finished with three goals, and Daniel Riley and Jin Tae Kim each chipped in a goal. Providence Classical Christian was led by Eric Moisant and Oliver Thomas, who each scored one goal. Dallas ZanEss started in goal for North Sound, Providence Classical Christian's keeper was not recorded. Providence Classical Christian fell to 2-1-1 in league and 4-2-1 overall. North Sound's record was not recorded.
