Big Game Hunter:"Fracture"

  • "Fracture"

    "Fracture"

World disorder: Having been jettisoned from the womb with a Gameboy in hand, I have seen and played everything the medium can think of.

I've conquered Europe, hunted dinosaurs with bow and arrow, and single-handedly saved the planet from alien invasion. Twice.

When "Fracture" came out I had to take a step back and blink. Here's a game with terrain deformation at its heart. Yes, you win by playing with dirt.

"Fracture" is set in a future where global warming has resulted in catastrophic living conditions. Two factions are fighting over what's left of America, and as Jet Brody -- insert laughter here -- you are a demolitions expert for the Atlantic Alliance fighting against the Republic of Pacifica.

"Fracture" is slightly more than its punch-line plot. Terrain deformation is used in a series of puzzle elements that make the game that much more interesting. Create a hill to jump over a wall, create a depression near it to go underneath or create a spear of volcanic rock to support a bridge.

Day One Studios really created a gorgeous game to look at, but, much like my ex, there's not much substance.

I'd be hesitant to drop $60 on this title, but this game is well worth a rental.

For: the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Rated: "T" for Teen.

Price: $60
