Family escapes small house fire

LYNNWOOD -- Alerted by a smoke alarm, a family whose home caught on fire Saturday afternoon evacuated safely.

Firefighters were called to the house in the 16800 block of Alder Way around 5:40 p.m., Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.

A man who was at home with a young child heard a smoke alarm and saw smoke coming from upstairs, Hynes said.

The two got outside quickly and called 911. Nobody was hurt.

Another member of the family, who rent the house, wasn't home at the time, Hynes said.

Firefighters determined that the fire started in the heating equipment in the attic.

When crews arrived at the house, the heating unit was smoldering, Hynes said.

The fire was contained to the attic area and the damage was minimal.

Hynes said the family have renters' insurance but will have to stay somewhere else until the electrical system is checked out.

Firefighters cleared the scene in about two hours.

Hynes said the working smoke detector played a role in the family's safety.

"The smoke alarm gave them the warning they needed. Without it, the fire could have gotten a lot bigger," Hynes said.
