We are fighting the good fight
I also have been with the union and company a long time, 28 years. I do not believe the "newbies" were manipulated. The newly hired people I am familiar with have proven to be very capable of making decisions on their own. Whether those decisions are "good," I do not know, nor will I judge them.
In all those years, I have worked with people who have proven to be skilled beyond the norm. Most of the people I have worked with would, in any other union, be graded as "journeyman." Pay would be much higher than it is today.
To those who believe unions are outdated, think about them the next time you do anything in this country like flip a switch or drive over a bridge or rely on the electricity being there for you to run your wi-fi, computer, phone, etc. Those entire systems were built by union members, and those same unions need more people every day to maintain and improve the existing infrastructure that provides you a living, and the ability to do everything you do.
So, your failure to support unions is actually your stated decision that you dislike this country and your lifestyle.
Yes, we could accept what the company "offered" and spend the next three years with our tails between our legs, like a "good dog," and continue to fight amongst ourselves for those tasty scraps, such as "team leader."
Or, we can accept that we are fighting a "good fight," one that will allow us to walk upright.
Unfortunately, we will be expected to carry the weight of "mismanagement," as all workers do.
To those who are offended, you need to be. To others, have a good day.
