Applause
7-year-old's party helps cats and dogs
Brooke Bauman, 7, of Lake Stevens recently fulfilled her dream to donate food, treats, toys and money to animals at the Everett Animal Shelter.
For her seventh birthday party, Brooke asked that friends and family who attended bring items to help the cats and dogs at the Everett Animal Shelter instead of gifts for her. On the day of her party, the power was out at the pool where she had planned to have her party. Since guests were already on their way, the pool staff provided directions to Brooke's home. Eighteen kids enjoyed the party and helped make Brooke's dream come true. Brooke recently delivered the donations to the Everett Animal Shelter.
Dentist helps Everett YWCA with clothes
More than 50 friends and patients of Everett dentist Dr. Amy Norman recently donated clothing valued at about $10,000 during the dental office's fourth annual weeklong clothing drive. The drive benefited the Snohomish County YWCA Working Women's Wardrobe Program.
Last year, the program at the regional center of the YWCA in Everett provided clothing to more than 1,100 low-income women who needed interview- or work-appropriate clothing. Volunteers from the Mill Creek Women's Club assisted women with selection of clothing and accessories to complete their wardrobes.
Everett Sea Scouts honor leader Malinsky
Sea Scout Ship No. 226 of Everett recently honored Georgia Malinsky for her outstanding leadership, service and commitment to the ship during the last four years. Malinsky was presented with a photo montage and a citation signed by the Scouts at a Bridge of Honor event.
Since volunteering to be an adult ship leader, Malinsky has assisted in educational programs, managed the ship's finances and skippered boats. Her contributions have been instrumental in the ship's success.
Nonprofit receives $25,000 in donations
Sherwood Community Services, a nonprofit that works with people with disabilities, recently received more than $25,000 in auction items from the Everett Silvertips Hockey Club. Donated items included used game jerseys and sticks, autographed artwork, suite tickets and other items. Silvertips players and staff members also visited with Sherwood kids during the year.
Roughly 500 individuals and their families receive support and services from Sherwood's programs each year. Sherwood provides a Career Connection program for adults, which helps them gain independent employment. The nonprofit also provides in-home physical, speech and occupational therapy to Snohomish County children newborn to 3 years old with disabilities.
Tribes give $10,000 to Christmas House
The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians recently donated $10,000 to Christmas House to help provide Christmas gifts to low-income families with children, newborn to age 18, in Snohomish County.
Sultan Food Bank receives food, $352
The Sultan Food Bank recently received $352 and eight large boxes of groceries through donations made at the Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church's annual fundraiser at the Gold Bar Family Grocer.
Jacki Zugeber, facilities manager for the food bank, said the Sultan Food Bank provides help for 2,400 people monthly and serves the upper Sky Valley area from Sultan to Skykomish. The volunteer organization is in need of drivers to drive the food bank van to stores and facilities to pick up regular donations.
HopeLink receives $600 in donations
HopeLink, a nonprofit that serves homeless and low-income families, seniors and people with disabilities, recently received cash and food donations valued at more than $600 from donations made at the Evergreen Washelli annual Chilifest in Bothell. Roughly 200 people sampled the culinary wares of 18 chili chefs. Attendees could vote for the Peoples' Choice Award by donating either a dollar or a package of nonperishable food. The Dowd-Hofer chili entry prepared by Steve Hofer from Steve's Cafe in Bothell won award.
Library gets 1,000 books from AquaSox
The Sno-Isle Libraries recently received more than 1,000 children's books from the Everett AquaSox. The library plans to add the books to its children's collection and to donate some of the books to local child-care centers served by its mobile services department.
The new or gently used children's books were donated by ticket-holders as part of an AquaSox promotion with the Washington State Lottery during the 2008 baseball season. Ticket-holders who donated a children's book received a free $1 scratch ticket.
The Sno-Isle Libraries serves more than 646,000 residents in Snohomish and Island counties with community libraries in Arlington, Brier, Camano Island, Clinton, Coupeville, Darrington, Edmonds, Freeland, Granite Falls, Lake Stevens, Langley, Lynnwood, Marysville, Mill Creek, Monroe, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, Oak Harbor, Snohomish, Stanwood and Sultan. The library system also offers mobile services for the home bound and local day cares.
Everett's author's short story honored
Everett author Christine Morgan's short story "The Barrow Maid," recently earned a listing in the honorable mention category of the 2008 volume of Year's Best Fantasy and Horror. "The Barrow Maid," which is a saga of Viking warriors and the undead, appeared in the Permuted Press anthology "History is Dead."
Red Cross volunteer earns elite training
Camano Island resident and Red Cross volunteer Donald Odenborg recently was selected by the American Red Cross for instructor training in the organization's Service to the Armed Forces program. Odenborg is one of 40 Red Cross volunteers from across the U.S. who was offered the specialized course at the organization's national headquarters in Washington, D.C.
Graduates of the training are certified as national instructors qualified to teach SAF caseworker courses to Red Cross volunteer and paid staff. Caseworkers assist military personnel and their families with emergency communications, health and welfare inquiries, financial help when emergencies occur and referrals to other agencies.
Odenborg has been a Red Cross volunteer in the Snohomish County Chapter's SAF office at Naval Station Everett for more than four years. Before joining Red Cross, Odenborg was director of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society at Smokey Point until his retirement after 21 years.
Odenborg is a retired Navy master chief petty officer. He served on active duty in numerous leadership assignments including command master chief of Naval Reserve Readiness Command 22 when it was headquartered in Seattle and on the staff of the Chief of Naval Reserve at New Orleans. In June, Odenborg was presented the Bea Mansker Memorial Award by the Snohomish County Chapter of the Red Cross for outstanding service as an SAF volunteer.
His wife, Sally, has been a Red Cross disaster services volunteer with the Island County Chapter for more than 10 years.
Mill Creek Scout earns Eagle rank
Nathan Tjio of Mill Creek, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 120, recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Tjio will be honored at an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Nov. 1 at Northview Community Church in Mill Creek.
