YMCA offers help for military families

EVERETT -- The families of military personnel serving overseas sometimes struggle to hold down the fort at home.

YMCA of Snohomish County has joined an effort by the Armed Services YMCA and the Department of Defense to help military families with a variety of free programs.

November is Military Families Month, and local YMCA membership fees are being underwritten by a Department of Defense outreach campaign.

Spouses and families can take advantage of programs such as youth development, activities for children, family strengthening, recreation, and health and well-being classes.

Military families eligible for YMCA memberships include those of deployed National Guard personnel and reservists from all military branches, as well as families of those on active-duty status.

"The YMCA of Snohomish County is happy to help meet the critical needs facing families of deployed military service members," local YMCA president Scott Washburn said. "Families are the most affected when a loved one gets deployed, so we are deeply committed to providing them with the support they need."

The YMCA has provided educational, recreational, social and religious support to the military since 1861. Sponsored by the YMCA of Snohomish County, Naval Station Everett is an affiliate of the Armed Services YMCA.
