By John Boyle Herald Writer SEATTLE -- Start fast. That was the plan for Washington coming into Saturday's game against ASU. And for the 2008 version of Husky football, stopping the Sun Devils on the game's opening drive and answering with a field goal qualified as a blistering start. For the better part of three quarters, it looked like maybe, just maybe, the Huskies could find a way to end their 10-game losing streak that dates back to last November. Washington couldn't sustain that good start through four quarters, however, and Arizona State eventually took over late on the way to a 39-19 win that extended Washington's losing streak to a school-record 11 games, and snapped a six-game skid for the Sun Devils. The game was played in front of a crowd that was much smaller than the announced total of 57,013, but the Huskies still managed to play with more energy than they have in a long time. "We had some swagger in the locker room that I've never seen since I've been here, and I loved it," offensive coordinator Tim Lappano said. "There was some juice in the locker room. I feel like they felt that they could win. Our whole thing this week was, we've got to start fast, and that was part of the special plays that we designed was to help us start fast and make something happen." The special plays Lappano refers to were the trick plays and deep throws that at times made Saturday's game look more like a video game than a Pac-10 contest. Receiver Cody Bruns took a reverse pitch from tailback Terrance Dailey and threw 29 yards to D'Andre Goodwin on Washington's first drive. In the second quarter, Bruns caught a lateral from Fouch, then threw back to the quarterback for a 6-yard touchdown to tie the game at 10. Bruns' touchdown pass to Fouch capped an 81-yard touchdown drive that gave the Huskies a much-needed answer to an Arizona State score. With the score tied at 3-3, Washington elected to go for it on fourth-and-1, but Paul Homer fumbled reaching for the first down, and ASU's Troy Nolan scooped up the loose ball and ran 44 yards for a score. "I saw an opening, and there was a linebacker right there," Homer said. "I probably should have lowered my pads more. I tried to reach the ball out as I was looking to the side just to get another yard and as I was reaching it out it fell out. If Coach is going to rely on me I just have to get that first down and not have any question about that." Washington led 13-10 later in the second quarter when Matt Mosley caused a fumble that set up a 38-yard field goal for Ryan Perkins, who finished the game 4-for-4 on field goal attempts. Washington's multiple leads in this game were the team's first since leading 3-0 against Oregon State three weeks ago, and the Huskies led in the third quarter for just the second time this season, with the other second-half lead coming against BYU. The Huskies were denied their first halftime lead of the season, however, thanks to two ASU field goals in the final 1:02 of the quarter, the second of which was set up by a Fouch interception. Two more field goals by Perkins, the second of which was set up when Chris Stevens blocked a punt, gave Washington a third-quarter lead of 19-16, and the UW defense quickly got the ball back for the Huskies by forcing a punt. That's when Washington's liberal play-calling finally backfired, however. On the first play of the ensuing possession, the Huskies lined Bruns up under center, and he handed off to receiver Jermaine Kearse, who pitched to Fouch, who had been lined up as a receiver on the play. Fouch's No. 1 option, D'Andre Goodwin was covered, however, and before Fouch could try to find a secondary target, he was hammered for a 12-yard loss by ASU's James Brooks. That play led to a three-and-out, and the Sun Devils converted on a short field with an eight-play, 41-yard touchdown drive. The Huskies went three-and-out again on their next possession, and Arizona State again capitalized with a touchdown to go up 30-19. "Without a doubt, that was the turning point," said ASU coach Dennis Erickson, a 1965 graduate of Everett High School. "Terell [Carr] has to cover for the pass so he has to hold, so there are two things involved in it, but he got the sack and that was a huge, huge field position change." The Huskies offense never got on track in the second half -- Washington had just 75 yards in the second half after gaining 204 in the first -- and the Sun Devils pulled away with a third second-half touchdown and a safety, ruining what started out as a good night for the Huskies. "We played hard, we played with energy, but we did not finish," said Washington coach Tyrone Willingham. "That's what we've got to get to, we've got to find a way to finish."
