A real 'pop' concert with the Everett Symphony

Kids get a bang out of it: Imagine the childlike fun of popping a paper bag during a classical concert. Then imagine hundreds of these bags popping all at once.

The sound brought giggles and laughter to the audience who participated with its "boom, boom, boom" during the Everett Symphony Orchestra's rendition of Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture."

That piece was one of the selections of the symphony's "Ala Boston Pops" concert on Nov. 7 at Historic Everett Theatre. And delighting the audience like that is just the way musical director Paul-Elliott Cobbs conducts his orchestra.

Throughout the pops program, Cobbs told jokes and stories. The audience learned that composer Rossini was not your typical starving artist but made a good living, with his girth giving proof of that.

We also learned the Cobbs once accidentally threw his baton during a children's concert while conducting the "William Tell Overture." He got letters afterward from the kids, one of whom asked if he was mad at the horn section.

There's lots more in store this season, the orchestra's 70th. The concert list includes "The Nutcracker" Dec. 13 and 14 at Everett Civic Auditorium; "Mostly Mozart" in February at the Historical Everett Theatre; "A Night of Jazz" in April, also at Historic Everett; and "The Romantic and the Bohemian," featuring the violin of concertmaster Fred Chu, in May at Everett Civic Auditorium.
