COLLEGE BASKETBALL NOTEBOOK

Boston College suspends Rice: Boston College senior point guard Tyrese Rice, the Atlantic Coast Conference's second-leading scorer last season, was suspended for the season opener against Central Connecticut for violating team rules. The school announced the suspension before tip-off and said Rice would return for its next game, against Loyola (Md.) in the preseason NIT first round.

Florida guard gambled online: Florida guard Nick Calathes ran up about $600 in debt playing poker online but did not bet on sporting events, which would have violated NCAA rules. Rhe athletic department questioned Calathes and other Florida basketball players but found no evidence of wrongdoing. The story was first reported by Yahoo.com. Calathes played in Florida's season opener against Toledo.

Zags sign player from Canada: Gonzaga has signed 6-foot-5 wing Mangisto (Man-GEESE-toe) Arop (Rop) to a letter of intent to play basketball. Arop was born in the Sudan and now lives in Hamilton, Ontario, where he plays on the Canadian junior national team.

Villanova guard out: Villanova senior guard Dwayne Anderson is out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his left foot. Anderson, a projected starter, averaged 6.5 points last season. Anderson is the second Villanova player to be injured this month. On Nov. 6, senior forward Shane Clark underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and is expected to miss 3-6 weeks.

NCAA picks 5 women's Final Four hosts: The NCAA has selected Denver, New Orleans, Nashville, Tampa and Indianapolis to host the women's basketball Final Fours from 2012 through 2016. The five cities were selected from among eight finalists announced in August.
