Monroe student wins FFA speech award

Chris Furrer of the Monroe High School Future Farmers of America chapter was one of 49 state winners in the 2008 national FFA Extemporaneous Public Speaking Career Development event recently held during the 81st national FFA convention.

The award recognized FFA members for their ability to prepare and present a factual speech on a specific agricultural issue. Members selected one topic from a choice of categories, prepared a four-to six-minute speech in 30 minutes and responded to five minutes of questions following delivery of their speech.



Everett Elks name Students of the Month

Everett Elks Lodge No. 479 recently named Students of the Month for September and October.

Edith Cruz-Gayton, a junior in the Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center nursing assistant program, was named Student of the Month for September. Edith is also a student at Edmonds Woodway High School, and volunteers for Clothes for Kids.

Shelby Odenius, a junior also enrolled in the Sno-Isle Tech Skills Center nursing assistant program and a student at Arlington High School, was named October Student of the Month. She has volunteered at the Everett Children's Museum.



EvCC wins two marketing awards

Everett Community College recently won two awards for community college outreach from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations District No. 7. The college received a gold award, the highest honor for its Because You advertising campaign and a silver award for its Web site.

The Because You campaign was developed by Katherine Schiffner, Manja Schultz, Dennis Ryan, Christina Manwell and Jenny Zuvela of EvCC's college advancement office.

The college's Web site was developed by Information Technology Web developer William Frankhouser and designed by visual communications design instructor Greg Kammer.

The district includes community and technical colleges in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan and Yukon Territory.

Snohomish students honored by Rotary

The Rotary Club of Snohomish recently honored students for their work during first quarter.

The students, listed by their schools, were:

Centennial Middle School: Bryce Carr, eighth grade, and Jory Strickland, seventh grade.

Valley View Middle School: Callie Bircher, seventh grade, and Juan Machuca-Garin, eighth grade.

Glacier Peaks High School: Ivey Lackey, ninth grade; Nicholas Sage, 10th grade; and Catherine Jorgenson, 11th grade.

Snohomish High School: Maegan Nelson, ninth grade; Kaia Thoreson, 10th grade; Nicholas Hund, 11th grade; and Claire Cummings, 12th grade.



Stanwood team first in shooting competition

The Stanwood Future Farmers of America trap shooting team recently placed first out of twelve teams at the district No. 1 trap shoot finals. Trap team members shooting for Stanwood FFA included Pat Quinn, Nate Towse, Scott Weisse, Cory Calkins and Matt Jacobs.

Quinn placed second overall in individual competition out of 60 contestants.

Lake Stevens names Apple Award recipients

The Lake Stevens School District recently named its Apple Award recipients. The employees named were recognized for creating a positive, caring and productive school environment. They were nominated and selected by their peers.

The recipients were: Chris Thornton, a teacher at Lake Stevens Middle School; John Gebert, principal at Cavelero Mid High; Jim Weissert, network administrator and tech manager at Lake Stevens School District; and Caryl Nolan, a custodian at Sunnycrest Elementary.



Snohomish resident named principal of year

Dana Mott of Snohomish, principal of Evergreen Academy in Bothell, recently was named Elementary Principal of the Year by Nobel Learning Communities. Mott was honored at Nobel's annual principal's conference, which was held in Las Vegas.

The award is presented each year to a principal who stands out among Nobel Learning Communities' 33 elementary schools across the country for inspiring and motivating both students and staff.

Mott holds a bachelor of arts degree in human development from Washington State University in Pullman. She has been principal at Evergreen Academy since 2004 and has been an educator for more than 10 years.

Evergreen Academy is part of Nobel Learning Communities Inc., a national network of more than 170 nonsectarian private schools, including preschools, elementary schools and middle schools in 15 states.



Lake Stevens middle-schoolers honor veterans

Students of Lake Stevens Middle School recently honored veterans at an assembly with the theme "Letters." The students displayed flags and candles in the school's auditorium and the seventh-grade band provided music.

Lance Cpl. Matthew Leonard, a former Lake Stevens Middle School student, was the guest speaker. Leonard presented Marshall Wiygul, shop teacher and a Vietnam War veteran, with a plaque and an American flag that he flew in Wiygul's honor during his recent tour in Habbaniya, Iraq.

Several students read letters from various wars. One letter was written by a father during World War II to his newborn daughter, expressing his love for her and hopes for her future. Another was a letter from a husband to his wife discussing his fears and desires to be a good leader during the Vietnam War.
