10 reasons to be thankful for the Mariners

This time of year reminds us how precious such things as family, friends and health really are. Getting riled up over something as trivial as a last-place baseball team seems a little much compared with what's reallly important in life.
Still, there are reasons to be thankful for the Mariners despite all the angst they may have given their fans. Here are 10 I've come up with, in no particular order:
-- They're playing in Seattle and not Tampa Bay, which was a very real possibility in the mid-1990s.
-- They might have finished last, but they still won 61 more games than the Huskies.
-- Felix Hernandez is on the verge of taking the next step into the elite of all pitchers.
-- The 1995, 2000 and 2001 seasons gave us playoff teams, star players and memories that can't fade even during a last-place year.
-- After unfulfilled expectations delivered by men named Bavasi, Cirillo, Sexson, Aurilia, Spiezio and Vidro, there's a sense of rebirth under the new regime of Zduriencik, Wakamatsu and a front office that hopes to improve the organization from the bottom up.
-- That there's a chance Ken Griffey Jr. will finish his career as a Mariner.
-- Even during a year as dismal as this, Safeco Field can be a beehive of energy. Sometimes it takes a series against Boston and half the stadium chanting "Let's Go Red Sox!" to get the crowd going, but it's a scene to behold.
-- Kids may not remember who won or lost , but they'll never forget what the Mariner Moose did.
-- That M's fans can watch fearless Adrian Beltre against any rocket hit to him at third base.
-- That Thanksgiving means less than three months remain until spring training.
Have a great holiday.
