Thanksgiving freebie: Hives vs. Cyndi Lauper

Posted at 12:01 am

This holiday weekend, the Hives and Cyndi Lauper have a present for you.

The two teamed up to record "A Christmas Duel," a holiday song about dysfunctional relationships. The Web site Stereogum.com, which is streaming a preview of the song, mentions it sounds a bit like the Pogues "Fairytale of New York," with its sorrowful intro.

When Lauper comes in after about one minute, however, the track kicks into a higher gear. (Really, it's sort of ironic that the Hives' Howlin' Pelle Almqvist is basically relegated to the role of dour straight man on the duel. Ah, Cyndi, you spark plug you!)

The track is free at the Hives Web site through Sunday, after which it can be purchased at the Orchard. No disrespect to the track, but we recommend getting it while it's free.
