Bothell firefighter injured when awning collapses

A Bothell firefighter was seriously injured Friday when an awning, loaded with snow, collapsed on him as he responded to a medical call.

The firefighter's name was not released and his condition was unavailable late Friday.

The firefighter was driven to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after the 4:45 p.m. collapse and was scheduled to undergo facial surgery late Friday, said Lisa Allen, a spokeswoman for the Bothell Fire Department.

The firefighter, 52, is a 20-year veteran of the department, Allen said.

He was responding to a call about a patient with chest pain at the Green Acres Mobile Home Park, 23825 15th Ave. SE, when the incident occurred, she said. The firefighter was bringing a stretcher to transport the patient when the awning came down on him.

The patient was still inside the home and was not injured in the collapse. The patient was transported by paramedics to Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland.

The fire department is asking residents to carefully watch the roofs of their homes for signs of overloading by snow. More information is available at www.ci.bothell.wa.us.
