Stanwood's Koetje in Sports Illustrated

Kyle Koetje of Stanwood High School is known as one of the top tennis players in the area. Now people across the country are learning about him.

Koetje (pronounced Coo-chee), a senior, is listed in the Faces in the Crowd section in the Dec. 29 issue of Sports Illustrated. To read online about Koetje and other standout student-athletes, go to http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com and search for "Faces in the Crowd".

"I actually have not seen it yet," Koetje, the 2008 Western Conference North Division singles champion and Class 4A District 1 runnerup, said Tuesday afternoon. He and his parents do not subscribe to the magazine and have not found the current issue at local stores, Koetje said.

Lots of friends and family members have called to congratulate him, said Koetje, who qualified for the Class 4A state boys tennis tournament that will be held in May.

Koetje said he was nominated for the Sports Illustrated honor by a friend, Jeff Epperson, one of Koetje's tennis teammates at Stanwood High.
