Ryan Sells scored eight points in the fourth quarter, Paul Clingan finished with a team-high 13 points and Mountlake Terrace beat Mariner 57-48 in a Western Conference South Division boys basketball clash.

Michael Minor tallied a game-high 15 points for Mariner, which endured its first division loss of the season. The Marauders were just 19 of 53 (35.8 percent) from the field.

End of third quarter: Mountlake Terrace 37, Mariner 36.

Once again, Terrace started the quarter slow but finished strong. The Hawks were down 31-23, but they outhustled Mariner for several loose balls and scored a barrage of interior baskets.

Paul Clingan scored five points in the period for Terrace, which closed the quarter on a 10-2 scoring run.

After leading by as many as eight points midway through the second quarter, Mariner has a one-point lead over Mountlake Terrace (24-23) at halftime.

Michael Minor, who leads Mariner with seven points, made a 15-foot jump shot and gave the Maruaders 23-15 lead. But Terrace rallied and outscored Mariner 8-1 over the final 4:07 of the half.

Reserve guard Jacob Champoux provided a huge boost for Terrace. He scored eight points in the first half, including two 3-pointers. Champoux also swiped two steals, making an impact on both ends of the court.

Mariner fell behind 10-4 in the first quarter but got hot and finished 7 of 14 from the field in the period. But the Marauders were just 3 for 13 in the second quarter and committed five turnovers.

It's time for my first game of the New Year. Thanks to all the weather-related postponements last month, it's actually been quite a while since I've covered prep hoops.

Tonight's game here at Mariner High should be a good one. Mariner and Mountlake Terrace both are unbeaten in Wesco South action. This should be the biggest league test so far for Terrace, which has league victories against Lynnwood, Kamiak, Shorewood, Glacier Peak and Edmonds-Woodway.

Let's take a quick look at the team scoring averages: Terrace averages 60.6 points per game and allows 46.9. Mariner has averaged 54.8 ppg and has given up 49.2.

The top scorers for Terrace are Ryan Sells (13.9 ppg), Karsten Strieby 12.9 ppg and Paul Clingan 10.9 ppg.

Mariner's scoring leaders are Michael Minor 13.8 ppg, Tevin Dillon 11.8 ppg and Damascus Purnell 10.3 ppg.
