Outdoors Pick of the Week: Skagit River Eagle Watching
Even longtime outdoor folks are impressed the first time they see the bald eagle show on the Skagit River this time of year. It's an incredible sight, unique to this part of the state, and well worth the effort at least once.
Raft trips are a great way to do it, but if that's over the top for you, a drive along certain stretches of the river is almost as good. Start at the Bald Eagle Interpretive Center at Howard Miller Steelhead Park in Rockport, open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Fridays through Sundays until Feb. 18. Folks there can tell you where volunteer staff will be posted along the river above Rockport, and offer guided nature walks on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Add salmon viewing to your trip, via tours of the Marblemount Salmon Hatchery, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
For more information on this, or on the Upper Skagit Bald Eagle Festival, scheduled for Jan. 24-25, go to www.skagiteagle.org.
