Applause
Oak Harbor girl helps sell Christmas trees
Oak Harbor first-grader Hailey Bund, 6, recently helped the Oak Harbor Lions Club sell Christmas trees.
Hailey, wearing a reindeer headband, stood along Highway 20 waving to potential customers. When people entered the lot, Hailey told them to look around and asked them to let her know if they needed help. She also handed out candy canes and helped carry small trees to the display area to help restock it.
Hailey is the daughter of Christy and Justin Bund; Christy Bund is a member of the Oak Harbor Lions.
Warm Beach Royal Ranger earns bronze
Royal Ranger Outpost No. 168 member Larry Norris III recently achieved the Royal Ranger Bronze Medal of Achievement. Senior Commander Larry Norris Jr. and Ron Large, divisional coordinator, presented the award.
Larry received a letter of recognition from Doug Marsh, Royal Ranger national commander, along with a certificate, ribbon bar and medal drape.
Earlier in the year, Larry passed the District Ranger of the Year evaluations and earned his Discovery Ranger Gold Eagle Achievement award.
Larry is the son of Larry Norris Jr. of Stanwood and Dianne Davis of Fresno, Calif. He attends Highland Christian School in Arlington where he participates in soccer and basketball. He also plays baseball.
Outpost No. 168 is sponsored by Warm Beach Community Church. The Royal Rangers is a merit driven program similar to Boy Scouts, offered by the Assembly of God Church.
Student raises money for Clothes for Kids
A student at Northshore Christian Academy in Everett, Conrad Kurrle, 13, recently collected 132 items of new and gently used clothing and $400 to purchase new coats during a clothing drive he organized for Clothes for Kids.
Conrad also collected donations of new underwear, socks and shoes from various collection sites including the Mountlake Terrace Police Department and Mountlake Terrace Pavilion.
Since 1984, Clothes for Kids has provided clothing for children of low-income families in Snohomish County.
Soroptimists give $2,000 for Christmas
The Marysville Soroptimist Club recently gave $2,000 to the Operation Marysville Community Christmas committee. Carol Biegler, Soroptimist president, presented the award to Operation Marysville Community Christmas treasurer Rita Henry.
Soroptimist members earned the money through the club's annual fundraisers, including its fall auction.
Operation Marysville Community Christmas used the funds to purchase new toys for local children. Soroptimist members also donated 16 artificial lighted Christmas trees to Operation Marysville to be distributed to families in need.
Mukilteo Boy Scout finishes Eagle project
A member of Boy Scout Troop No. 189 of Mukilteo, Jason Wyble, recently completed his Eagle Scout project. Jason is a senior at Kamiak High School.
With the help of 24 Scouts, parents and other volunteers, Jason replaced five tables and two benches at Harborview Park in Everett. The team worked roughly 300 hours on the project. Plywood Supply in Kenmore donated recycled plastic boards for the benches. Volunteers planed and refinished some of the existing wood on the benches.
Comcast employees give $5,000 to kids
Comcast employees recently raised $5,000 for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County during the Comcast Bowl for Kids' Sake fundraiser at Glacier Lanes in Everett. Employees bowled for one hour to raise the funds. Fifty employees gathered pledges.
Big Brothers Big Sisters provides free mentoring programs to children and families in Snohomish County.
First Heritage gives $6,000 to nonprofits
First Heritage Bank employees recently awarded grants totaling $6,000 to eight nonprofit organizations. Among the groups receiving the grants were the Assistance League of Everett, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Snohomish County, Cascade Gleaning Association, Christmas House, Housing Hope, Kids' Kits Program, Sky Valley Homeless Task Force and the Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force.
The funds were given through the First Heritage Bank Employee Giving Fund at the Greater Everett Community Foundation.
The fund is one of more than 90 charitable funds managed by the Greater Everett Community Foundation.
Mountain Pacific Bank gives $6,000
Mountain Pacific Bank employees and directors recently awarded grants totaling $6,025 to eight nonprofit organizations. The grants were given through the Mountain Pacific Bank Employee and Director's Giving Fund at the Greater Everett Community Foundation.
Grants were given to Assistance League of Everett, Boys & Girls Clubs, Christmas House, Clothes for Kids, Cocoon House, Housing Hope, St. Vincent de Paul and Village Community Services.
Firefighters receive $32,457 in new gear
The Stanwood-Camano Fire Department recently received $32,457 in protective firefighting equipment and clothing through the Fireman's Fund Heritage Program and Totem Agencies.
Fire Chief Mike Ganz and Stanwood-Camano firefighters were on hand for the awards presentation.
Fireman's Fund Insurance Co. has awarded $21 million to 1,100 fire stations since its inception in 2004.
Arts council receives $400,000 grant
The Arts Council of Snohomish County recently received a $400,000 challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation for the construction of its visual arts education center.
To meet the Kresge challenge, the Arts Council needs to raise $1.7 million in new gifts and pledges for its visual arts education center capital campaign by Feb. 1, 2010. More than $2.7 million of a $6 million goal has been raised in the campaign, which began in 2006. The campaign also was recently recommended for $1 million in Washington State Building for the Arts funding.
The Arts Council is working with Artspace Projects Inc. to build a new multiuse regional arts center in downtown Everett. The 80,000-square-foot facility is intended to provide a new home for Arts Council programs and affordable housing for working artists and their families through Artspace.
The Kresge Foundation is a private organization located in Troy, Mich. Last year, the foundation awarded 283 grants throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and South Africa, totaling $178 million.
