    PREP BASKETBALL ROUNDUP

    Mariner boys beat Meadowdale 44-39

LYNNWOOD -- The Mariner boys basketball team would like a spot at the top of the Wesco South too.

Senior post Damascus Purnell scored 12 points and Josh Kiehl hit two 3-pointers late, as Mariner took a 44-39 Wesco South victory over Meadowdale at Meadowdale High School on Saturday night.

It was the first Wesco South loss of the season for Meadowdale, which entered the game 6-0 and tied with Mountlake Terrace for first place.

Mariner improved to 6-1 in league.

"They made big shots when they needed to," Meadowdale assistant coach Dean Wiley said of Kiehl's two 3-pointers and a 15-foot jump shot by senior Nick Malysheff that put the game out of reach late.

Kiehl finished with 8 points for Mariner and Malysheff finished with seven points.

Mariner employed a zone defense to slow down Meadowdale, and also a press defense to prevent the Mavericks from getting into their offense.

"(Mariner head coach) Dexter Griffin does a great job," Wiley said. "They're real physical, and they play aggressive."

Roger O'Neill led the Mavericks with 16 points and hit two 3-pointers, and Kris Larson added 10 points.
