Floods on film

Caught in a deluge: Many dealt with the reality of flooding this past week, but what about the fiction?

Here, a look at some floods staged by Hollywood in recent decades.

"THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW" (2004): Global warming triggers a flood in Manhattan. Weather patterns change, the temperature drops, water freezes in the streets and hungry wolves show up.

"DAYLIGHT" (1996): Explosions cause New York City's Holland Tunnel to partially collapse, trapping a bunch of commuters and one dog. Sylvester Stallone comes to the rescue.

"EVAN ALMIGHTY" (2007): Steve Carell plays a congressman tasked by God to build an ark. People think he's crazy, until a flood comes. Hello, re-election.

"O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU" (2000): George Clooney leads some escaped convicts on a search for stolen treasure, trying to reach it before the valley where it's hidden is flooded to create a reservoir.

"SUPERMAN" (1978): After Lex Luthor sets off a nuclear bomb on the San Andreas Fault, the Hoover Dam collapses. Superman deals with the flood by flying around the globe at light speed, reversing the course of time.

"WATERWORLD" (1995): The polar ice caps have melted, raising ocean levels. Also: Kevin Costner has gills and Dennis Hopper has one eye.
