Prepare now for next disaster

More winter weather could be around the corner. The Federal Emergency Management Agency Acting Regional Administrator Dennis Hunsinger advises homeowners to get ready.

"Now is a good time to inventory and restock those all- important 72-hour emergency kits with fresh water, food, prescription medication, flashlight and radio batteries and all the rest of our emergency supplies," Hunsinger said. "It's a good idea to keep disaster kits at home, in your vehicle and at work."

It's not about paranoia, he said. "It's all about being a prudent and responsible person, parent and neighbor."

Walthall Library fund established

In honor of the newly dedicated Shirley L. Walthall Library at Hawthorne Elementary School in Everett, a group supporting the school has established a fund to buy books, supplies and support programs for the library.

The Everett School Board named the library the Shirley L. Walthall Library at the urging of the Hawthorne Ambassadors. A ceremony attended by more than 100 people took place last week.

The library naming recognizes the 39 years Walthall spent in education. She worked for 15 years at Hawthorne Elementary, 10 as a teacher and five as the school's principal.

Donations can be sent to the Everett Public Schools Foundation in care of the Shirley Walthall Library Fund, P.O. Box 3112, Everett, WA 98213.

For more information, call Kristie Dutton, executive director, at 425-385-4693.

Correction

Horizon Air seeks to begin service from Paine Field with four flights to Portland and two flights to Spokane each day. A story on page B1 Saturday misstated the airline's plan.
