No. 18 Minnesota rallies to beat Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. -- Lawrence Westbrook hit a 3-pointer to tie the game with two seconds left in regulation, then scored nine points in overtime as No. 18 Minnesota rallied for a 78-74 victory over Wisconsin on Thursday night.

Westbrook scored 29 points to lead the Gophers (16-1, 4-1 Big Ten), who rallied from a nine-point deficit with 3:24 remaining to steal a rare road victory at the Kohl Center. Minnesota hadn't won at Wisconsin since Feb. 12, 1994 -- and even that win was tainted by the academic scandal under former coach Clem Haskins.

Marcus Landry scored 18 for the Badgers (12-5, 3-2), who have lost two straight.

Wisconsin appeared to be on its way to a relatively easy victory, but Minnesota used a full-court press to force the Badgers to fumble away the lead.

Westbrook's 3-pointer with two seconds left in regulation capped the rally and sent the game into overtime, where the Badgers appeared to run out of steam.

Minnesota held Wisconsin scoreless through the first four minutes of overtime as Westbrook completed a three-point play, Devron Bostick hit a driving layup and Westbrook hit a jumper before the Badgers' Trevon Hughes hit a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 69-65 with 59.3 seconds remaining.

Bostick then broke free for a dunk, and hit one of two free throws on the Gophers' next possession. Wisconsin's Joe Krabbenhoft scored, and Minnesota's Damian Johnson hit a pair of free throws.

Wisconsin's Jon Leuer then hit a 3-pointer to cut the Gophers' lead to 74-70 with 23.5 seconds left, then hit a pair of free throws with 11.4 left.

But Westbrook then went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 10.5 seconds, holding off the Badgers' own late comeback attempt.

After Westbrook's pair of makes with 10.5 left, Bohannon hit a layup to again cut the lead to two. But Westbrook hit two more from the line, and Bohannon's miss ended the game for the Badgers.

Before their recent resurgence under coach Tubby Smith, Minnesota hadn't won in Madison since 1994 -- and thanks to the academic scandal, the Gophers' last win at Wisconsin that officially counts in the school's record books was exactly 17 years ago -- Jan. 15, 1992.

And for a long time, it looked like that streak would continue.

The Gophers hit six of their first seven shots to start the game, but then fell into a deep freeze to rival the arctic overnight temperatures forecast for Madison.

After Al Nolen hit a floating jumper to give Minnesota a 14-8 lead at the 14:54 mark of the first half. But the Gophers didn't score again until Ralph Sampson III's putback at the 7:13 mark -- a scoreless streak of 7:41.

Minnesota put together a late run, only to watch Landry hit a 3-pointer at the first half buzzer to take a 33-22 lead into halftime.

The Gophers began the second half on a 5-1 run to cut the Badgers' lead to seven, but Wisconsin answered with a driving layup by Krabbenhoft that kicked off a 7-0 run that included a 3-pointer by Bohannon and a long jumper by Hughes that gave the Badgers a 41-27 lead with 14:03 remaining.
