Index road closed by landslide set to reopen next week

INDEX – Mount Index River Road, also known as Forest Service Road 6020, is open with one lane of traffic for local residents from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m. this weekend.

It is not scheduled to be open to the public until Wednesday.

Workers are building a new roadway into the hillside adjacent to the old road, and unexpected problems have postponed the opening to all traffic, said Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest spokeswoman Renee Bodine.

A landslide last Saturday closed access to a neighborhood of more than 100 people. The road is east of Index and connects people there with U.S. 2
