Lynnwood firefighters give Christmas hams

Firefighters from the Lynnwood Fire Department recently donated about 300 pounds of ham to the Lynnwood Food Bank for its Christmas baskets.

Members of International Association of Firefighters Local No. 1984 worked with the Lynnwood Albertsons to purchase the hams at a reduced price.

Monroe firefighters help seniors

Firefighters from Monroe Fire District No. 3 recently served food to the seniors at the East County Senior Center's annual Christmas luncheon.

Some firefighters worked on the serving line while others delivered food to tables. Monroe Fire Chief Jamie Silva wore an elf hat and helped Santa deliver presents to seniors.

The Monroe Firefighters International Association of Firefighters Local No. 3315 provided funds for the lunch.

Marysville firefighter becomes paramedic

Marysville firefighter Noah Pester recently graduated from the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center Paramedic Training Program.

Pester spent roughly nine months in the program, which consists of 350 hours of classroom lectures, 450 hours of laboratory work, 600 hours of clinical experience and 750 hours of field work including riding with the Seattle Fire Department-Medic One Program.

Pester is the 12th Marysville Fire District paramedic trained by the program since 1995.

Pester has been with Marysville Fire District for more than four years.

Food drive helps Stillaguamish seniors

Residents of the Lake Ki and the Lake Goodwin communities recently donated more than 1,500 pounds of food and $160 to the Stillaguamish Senior Center.

The food and money was collected during the fourth annual food drive at Lake Ki.

Bob Narin drove a covered truck donated by Rick and Ann Kazen from Cascade Cabinets to deliver the food to the senior center. The Roadhouse Restaurant provided a collection box.

Rotary club donates 300 turkey dinners

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club recently delivered 300 turkey dinner baskets to residents of south Snohomish County, most of whom lived in Everett.

Marsyville woman wins holiday contest

Bonny Sallee of Marysville recently was named a semifinalist in Kentucky Fried Chicken's Original Holiday Tradition Contest for her 12-foot Christmas tree.

KFC asked families across the country to showcase their original holiday traditions. The grand prize winner received $1,000 and a year's supply of KFC meals.

Lynnwood VFW sends treats to soldiers

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Lynnwood Post No. 1040 and its auxiliary recently collected and sent 32 pounds of coffee, candy and popcorn to an Army unit serving in Afghanistan. The group also plans to send a package to Marines there.

Everett firefighters help women's shelter

The Everett Fire Department's Engine Company No. 5 delivered Santa Claus and 10 bicycles and helmets to children at the Everett Gospel Mission Women's and Children's Shelter before Christmas.

The bicycles and helmets were donated by Everett Firefighters with International Association of Firefighters Local No. 46.

For the past four years, Everett City Councilman Ron Gipson has organized the event, which includes a homemade Christmas dinner for the shelter's residents.

The shelter is home to roughly 65 women and children.

Everett firefighters help Jerry's Kids

Everett Firefighters with the International Association of Firefighters Local No. 46 recently raised $10,000 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association during its "Fill The Boot" campaign.

The firefighters collected donations during four days at the corner of 19th Avenue SE and 100th Street.

IAFF firefighters across the nation were the largest contributor to the charity in 2008, raising a combined $27.5 million for Jerry's Kids.

Doctors offices help Arlington food bank

The office of Jeff Cartwright, Advanced Orthopaedic Institute and the office of Shawn Gay, a chiropractor, recently donated 222 pounds of food and $1,320 to the Arlington Food Bank.

The offices held a raffle to collect nonperishable food and $320 in cash. Cartwright provided an additional $1,000 to the total.

James Schwahn of Arlington won a silver iPod nano in the raffle.

Surplus store helps Catholic service

Catholic Community Services' Everett Family Center recently received 41 boxes of winter and outdoor clothing from Jerry's Surplus in Everett.

The nonprofit plans to give the items to people who need warm clothing.

Vicki Howell, CCS regional chief of operations, said the Catholic nonprofit agency receives daily calls from people asking for warm clothing.

Everett service club gives two awards

The Everett Sertoma Club recently honored Snohomish County resident Jeanne Olsen-Estie and Sertoma Club member Dave Burgen for their service. Olsen-Estie received the 2008 Service to Mankind Award. Burgen was named Sertoman of the Year for 2008.

The Service to Mankind Award is given to a non-Sertoma member who exhibits outstanding leadership and service to the community.

Olsen-Estie leads the Americanism committee for the Everett Elks Lodge No. 479, where she also is an officer, past exalted ruler and recipient of the Elk of the Year Award. Olsen-Estie has organized many events to raise funds for Elks charitable programs. She is a longtime Snohomish and Whatcom County businesswoman and has owned and operated golf and antique businesses. She also has served on the board of directors for Camp Fire Boys and Girls.

Al Furiak of the Everett Sertoma Club presented the awards to Olsen-Estie and Burgen at the annual awards ceremony held at the Everett Eagles Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 13.

Retired educators give Christmas gifts

The Sno-Isle Chapter of the Washington State School Retirees Association recently donated 125 pieces of handmade doll clothing, food and more than $800 in cash to the Salvation Army in Everett.

The association announced the donation at its annual Christmas brunch at The Everett Golf and Country Club.

More than 65 members attended the event.

Volunteers from the club spent months collecting toys and dressing dolls for children as part of the Salvation Army's Toy and Joy Shop program, which provides Christmas gifts to children of families with low incomes.

Pearl Miller has led the association's annual effort for more than 20 years.

Arlington police shop for 70 children

Arlington law enforcement personnel and the Arlington Haggen recently helped more than 70 children through the city's third annual Shop With A Cop event.

Local, state and federal law enforcement personnel worked with businesses to provide Christmas gifts for children from families with low incomes.

Lynnwood Scout donates CDs, DVDs

A Webelos Scout with Cub Scout Pack No. 59 of Lynnwood, Arthur Winton, recently collected 127 CDs and DVDs for service members serving overseas.

Arthur created a service project called Tunes for Troops and invited Scouts from Packs No. 49 and No. 59 to help. The items were mailed to a soldier serving in Iraq.

Youth baseball players help shelter

The Seattle Stars Baseball Club recently donated three truckloads of food and clothing to the Everett Gospel Mission Women's and Children's Shelter.

The Seattle Stars Baseball Club is comprised mostly of kids from Snohomish County who range in age from 13 to 18. The teams practice at a facility in Everett.

FEMA grant goes to Whidbey firefighters

The North Whidbey Fire and Rescue station in Oak Harbor recently received an assistance to firefighters grant check for $257,212 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Acting regional administrator Dennis Hunsinger presented the award.

Fire Chief Marv Koorn said North Whidbey Fire and Rescue plans to use the funds to purchase 45 self-contained breathing apparatus units to replace its low-pressure units, which are 12 years old.

The department also plans to purchase extra bottles, voice amplifier masks and high pressure cascade units for refilling the bottles, which are expected to enhance firefighters' effectiveness in battling fires and saving lives while providing extra protection for firefighters.

The Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program is administered cooperatively by FEMA's Grant Programs Directorate and the United States Fire Administration.
