Boeing jobs in India safe

Company hiring 478 positions worldwide

The Times of India reports that Boeing workers there won’t be among the 10,000 company-wide to lose their jobs this year.

That's likely to draw the ire of the 4,500 Boeing Commercial Airplanes workers -- most in the Puget Sound region -- who will receive layoff notices Feb. 20.

Last week, Boeing’s chief executive Jim McNerney said the company would reduce its workforce by 6 percent this year in an effort to stay competitive in a rough economy. The job cuts include the 4,500 BCA workers.

Boeing already handed out layoff notices to 190 Shared Services Group workers.

The remaining job cuts were to be distributed throughout Boeing divisions and sites.

From December 2008 to the end of January, Boeing reduced its workforce in Washington state by 113 positions, according to the company’s Web site. Company-wide, Boeing’s workforce declined slightly – from 162,191 at the end December to 162,152 in January.

Meanwhile, Boeing has about 478 positions advertised worldwide.
