Gov. assigns advisor to "keep" Boeing, jet biz in state

Should Washington state be worried about Boeing?

Posted at 4:02 pm by Michelle Dunlop

Gov. Gregoire has assigned a special advisor on aerospace to serve for the next six months.

Bill Sherry is on loan from the Puget Sound Regional Council and has served on the Aerospace Futures Alliance board.

“Boeing is a cornerstone of our state’s economy and we must do everything possible to ensure the company remains competitive," Gregoire said, in a press release.

Also from the press statement: Sherry "will focus on working with Boeing and the aerospace community to keep and increase commercial and military aircraft production in Washington."

Boeing expressed frustration with Washington state and the unions during the Machinists' strike this summer. And the company looked elsewhere before assembling the 787 here.

Earlier this week, analyst Richard Aboulafia speculated that Boeing won't build its next new jet here. Aerospace Futures Alliance leader Linda Lanham pounded home that same message. And Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon noted his concerns about landing a (rumored) second 787 line in Everett.

Reader question: Will Washington lose Boeing?

Keeping Boeing and HereWe Go Again
Here we go again. Boeing needs to look at where to snap together an airplane and the politicians are all flying around their offices pontificating about getting involved, or in some cases not involved.

The Governor is mulling a trip to Chicago to the home of Boeing Headqquarters. Boeing is one her most important customers. Will her knowledge about how to work with business rival her former peer, Governor Locke. Maybe her attention is focused on those green jobs or she has just been a government employee with no other experience in her lifetime

There is an Aerospace Counsel being headed by the new Director of Commerce, Rgers Weed. He has publicly stated that his first priority is Boeing and mainitaining the aerospace jobs we have in the Northwest.I watched that groups meeting last week on TVW. I didn't see much substance!

Now I see that the Governor has a new advisor on aerospace matters in Bill McSherry on loan from the Puget Sound Regional Council.

We need an aerospace study, according to the Governor. This is after the Snohmish County EDC payed DeLoitte Touche $250,000 for a study that shows there are more competitive disadvantages than advantages to Boeing staying in this state.

This report should be made public. Make no mistake about it, your tax dollars payed for this by contributions from CTED, Snohomish County, and cities and towns who contribute to this organization. What is so interesting about spending $250,000 is that nothing new was identified that we did not already know. Debbie Knutson is just as complicit as the rest.

Then you have silly County Executive Aaron Reardon running halfway around the world to Dubai to convince an airline from the Middle East to fly non-stop to Seattle Tacoma International Airport.

Last time I looked, Reardon was not a Port of Seattle Commissoner or staffer. Now this is the guy who does not support commercial air service out of his own airport, Paine Field, even though he knows there is no way to stop it.

Reardon goes on to criticize the state and by reference the Governor for not keeping up with the positive steps that were made to keep Boeing here in 2003.

Reardon has been the County Executive going on 6 years. What has he done to work with the Governor, the Legislature or other strategic partners to insure past success. NOTHING!

Reardon is now trying to insert himself into this process by flapppng his lips and blaming everyone but himself. Can you think of a more important priority for the Snohomish County Executive than being a good busines partner with Boeing and protecting the 153 manufacturing companies that work with Boeing or protecting the aerospace jobs that Boeing provides?

Needless to say, Washington State Government coupled with the Snohomish County Executive and EDC are running the proverbial Chineese fire drill. My apologies to the Chineese for the comparison.

With all of the new found aerospace activity, commissions, studies, mulitple people seemingly in charge, Boeing should get a great feeling that there is no better time to leave the state than now.

A business oreinted Governor, Legislature, County Executive and EDC would have been smart to treat Boeing like the good businesss partner they are, and work with them every day to develop the trust and credibility necessary to be true business partners.
