Flute player Janelle Janovich-Barrera will put her brand new flute on debut tonight when she plays with the Everett Symphony Orchestra at the "Mostly Mozart" concert at Historic Everett Theatre.

Janovich-Barrera's flute has a 14-carat gold head joint and a body made of silver. This flute sounds pretty sweet.

"It glows," Janovich-Barrera said in a phone interview from her home in Long Beach, Calif. "It's great to have so many tone colors; I couldn't achieve those before."

Janovich-Barrera performs as the soloist tonight during Mozart's Concerto No. 1 for Flute. She calls the piece "flashy in the middle" and among her favorites.

Another Mozart piece on tap tonight is Wind Serenade No. 10, which Janovich-Barrera said also has some beautiful flute parts.

Besides the flute parts, what will the audience like about this concert?

"Well, first, how can you not like Mozart?" Janovich-Barrera asked. "And this concert has got a lot of great pieces and they are really easy to listen to and will keep the audience's attention."

This is the first time the musician has played with Everett Symphony.

But she goes way back with Everett Symphony conductor Paul-Elliott Cobbs.

During high school, she was principal flute of the Tacoma Young Artists Orchestra and the Tacoma Youth Symphony. Cobbs is music director of Tacoma Youth Symphony, in addition to his position with the Everett Symphony.

"It's a great opportunity to play with fellow professional musicians. And a great opportunity to play with adults. I don't have that too often," she said.

Janovich-Barrera, 32, originally from Gig Harbor, has a degree in flute performance but these days devotes her time to teaching.

She holds a bachelor's from California State University, Long Beach, and a master's in music from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She was, for a time, principal flute with the Indiana University Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, and Wind Ensemble.

In Long Beach, she lives with her husband, James, a sax player, and their two cats while maintaining a large private flute studio. She serves as a faculty member of the Orange County High School of the Arts, coaches for the Orange County Junior Chamber Music Series, and is president of the Los Angeles Flute Guild.

In the past, she has traveled to Olympia to participate in the Evergreen Music Festival and is looking forward to visiting Everett.

"A lot of flute players ... we often don't have anywhere to go and play except recitals," Janovich-Barrera said. "So playing a solo and in a really good atmosphere with a good orchestra is a great opportunity for me. And I get to debut my new flute."
