    Prep basketball roundup

    MARYSVILLE -- Jackson avoided elimination on Saturday by knocking down some clutch, late free throws to eliminate Arlington from the 4A District 1 playoffs, 49-45.

    The game was a low-scoring, defensive battle in the first three quarters, with neither team scoring more than 13 points in a period. In the fourth quarter, Jackson outscored Arlington 19-17.

    "Neither team shot particularly well from the field," Jackson head coach Jeannie Thompson said.

    Arlington picked up the pace of the game in the fourth quarter and applied full-court pressure. But Jackson defended its lead by shooting 15-for-19 in the fourth quarter from the free-throw line.

    Chanel Sam led Jackson with 16 points. She shot 9-for-10 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter. Kristin Stoffel added 11 points and 14 rebounds for the winners.

    Edmonds Woodway 43, Cascade 40: At Marysville, Edmonds Woodway narrowly escaped Saturday in a 4A District 1 loser-out game. Edmonds Woodway is two wins away from taking the third seed into state, Cascade's season is over. Edmonds Woodway's second-leading scorer, Abby Butler (12.6 points per game), went down with an injury early in the fourth quarter. Coach Wayne Edwards said it is unknown if she will be able to play in the Warriors' next game Wednesday.

    Lynden Christian 64, King's 41: At Mt. Vernon, Lynden Christian made seven of 11 3-point shots en route to a 23-point 1A District 1 title game victory over King's. Lynden Christian earned a state berth and both teams moved on to the Tri-district tournament.

Nooksack Valley earned a spot in the Tri-district tournament. Sophomore Kendra O'Keefe scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and senior Kassie Lawon grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wolves.

Neah Bay took the top seed into state. North Sound Christian received the second seed.
