With everyone back, Jackson looks to next year

TACOMA -- Getting drubbed is a crummy way to finish a season, but for the Jackson girls Thursday's 62-31 season-ending loss to Lewis and Clark at the Class 4A state basketball tournament was also a stepping stone to a better showing next year.

And with all of the players in the regular rotation returning, the Timberwolves have a great chance of making another trip to the Tacoma Dome in 2009-10.

"This can only help," said Jackson coach Jeannie Thompson. "That's the best part about it. We got here, we're playing against some tremendous teams, and we're learning a lot about what we need to improve on to compete with these guys and to beat these guys at the state tournament."

On Thursday, some of those lessons were learned the hard way. The T-wolves were dominated physically by Lewis and Clark -- "Out-bodied," is how Thompson described it -- both around the basket and in the open court.

The Tigers from Spokane finished with a whopping 66-36 rebound margin and also had a 26-3 edge in second-chance points.

"Obviously we need to work on our physical play," said Thompson, whose team starts two juniors, two sophomores and a freshman. "We need to really focus on blocking out and getting tougher under the boards. The kids know now what they need to do to win at this level."

Lewis and Clark had 22 field goals in the game and 19 were either layins or rebound putbacks.

"I don't want to take anything away from (Lewis and Clark) because they're a great team and a great program," Thompson said. "But I do know that my kids can play a lot better than what they played today.

"It's unfortunate that we didn't give them our best game," she said. "I'd love to play them again and have my kids come out with confidence and fire and not get bullied. If I could bring that team back, I think we'd give them one heck of a ballgame. But unfortunately we didn't bring that game today."

Jackson, which ended its season with a 20-6 record, was led by the 13 points of guard Erin Feeney.
