M's Bedard scratched from his scheduled start

Yesterday, Brandon Morrow. Today, Erik Bedard.

Bedard became the second Mariner pitcher in as many days to go down with some sort of ailment. Bedard was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals because of a sore gluteus maximus muscle.

Manager Don Wakamatsu said it's not related to the hip problem that sidelined Bedard early last season.

"It's a muscle. It's not in the hip joint," Wakamatsu said. "Last year I think it was more in the joint. This is more butt muscle."

Bedard will be re-evaluated and, if he's fine, will throw off the bullpen mound on Saturday.

On Tuesday, Morrow continued to feel discomfort in his right forearm and cut his bullpen session short after just 22 pitches.

Wakamatsu said Bedard has felt pain in his backside for three or four days, and that having him skip a start now shouldn't affect his status in the rotation. That's what the Mariners also are saying about Morrow.
