With today marking the start of spring, many Northwesterners are getting in the mood for outdoor fun with their families.

Here are a few local options.

Spring into action: My Garden, a Mill Creek nursery, offers two free events Saturday.

The first is an ongoing all-ages scavenger hunt scheduled between garden talks that run from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

Hunters start with a clue such as "Find the owner who likes flowers and tell him or her what plants can't live without."

Each person will get five clues. A small prize, like a bag of organic potting soil, will be awarded when each entrant reaches the end of his or her clues, along with each name being entered for the grand prize, a bird bath.

From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., children can plant seeds in a pot. Kids will be provided with a clay pot and flower or vegetable seeds, and be shown how to plant them. Parents' assistance is required.

"We've only been open two years, so in 2009, we are dabbling with kids events," said My Garden co-owner Jenny Gunderson.

"Lots of parents tell us that their kids … beg to be brought here. We want My Garden to be a place to enjoy, relax and smell the flowers."

The nursery is at 17414 Bothell-Everett Highway. Details are available by calling 425-402-1842 or going to www.mygardennursery.com.

Birders weekend: The annual Birders Weekend will take place Saturday and Sunday at Emery's Garden, 2829 164th St. SW, Lynnwood.

Hourlong classes start at 10 a.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.

While Emery's employees say the information may be best suited to adults, some chickens and other birds will be on site, which would amuse children.

"It really is a class with mostly words, nothing hands-on," garden center director Amy Tullis said. "We do have a dozen or so bird/suet feeders here at the nursery and birds are always visiting the feeders and are a real joy to watch."

Registration is not required, and the event is free. Call 425-743-4555 or go to www.emerysgarden.com.
