Meeting about planned Stanwood road closure
By Gale Fiege Herald Writer
STANWOOD -- People opposed to the closure of the Logen Road railway crossing have another chance to express their opinions.
The state Utilities and Transportation Commission plans to hear comments on the proposed closure at a public meeting set for 6 p.m. Monday in the Stanwood office of Snohomish County Public Utility District, 9124 271st. St. NW.
The closure of the road, which is just north of Stanwood, has been requested by Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway. The railway company plans to extend a siding track north through the Logen Road crossing.
The extended second track is needed so that freight trains won't be delayed when the state Department of Transportation builds an Amtrak passenger platform in downtown Stanwood, transportation officials said.
People who can't attend the meeting on the road closure can e-mail comments@utc.wa.gov or mail comments to UTC, P.O. Box 47250, Olympia, WA 98504-7250. Those writing comments should make reference to the Utilities and Transportation case number TR-090121.
The state Legislature provided $5 million in 2005 to build the Amtrak platform. The delay in starting the project involved a number of issues, including the extension of the siding track and the closure of Logen Road.
When completed, the passenger platform is set to allow Amtrak Cascades trains to stop in Stanwood four times a day: northbound about 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. and southbound about 9:25 a.m. and 8:25 p.m. Passengers can buy their tickets online or over the phone and board the train with their reservation information in hand.
The 600-foot train passenger platform will include covered ramps, railings, shelters and seating.
