Is Arlington's Christina Rayner the area's best softball pitcher? On Monday Rayner threw a one-hit shutout and tallied 17 strikeouts in a 1-0 victory over Everett.

For our 2009 softball preview, Herald Writer Scott Whitmore talked to coaches about who will be the area’s most prominent pitching stars now that former local standouts Jordan Birch (Monroe), Cory Mattson (Everett) and Hillary Barker (Cedarcrest) are gone.

In the past few weeks, plenty of talented candidates have emerged. Among them is Arlington senior Christina Rayner. Monday night Rayner dominated Everett, striking out 17 during a one-hitter. Last week, I watched Rayner mow through Stanwood’s lineup for six innings before giving up a home run in the seventh and losing 2-0.

Who do you think is the best local fastpitch thrower? Here is a list of candidates. Vote for one of them or choose the “Other” option and write in a different name. As always, please speak out in the comments section.
