Community Roundup: Gonzaga baseball team nationally ranked
The Gonzaga University baseball team is starting to attract some national attention.
The Bulldogs (23-10) moved into the national rankings Monday for the first time in three years. Gonzaga is ranked No. 22 in this week's Baseball America poll.
One of the reasons for the Bulldogs' success has been the play of senior pitcher Matt Fields. In eight starts this season, the right-hander from Lake Stevens is 5-1 with a 2.52 earned-run average. He leads the Gonzaga staff in innings pitched (532/3) and strikeouts (46).
Last week, the West Coast Conference named Fields its pitcher of week for his performance April 3 in a 3-1 victory over Pepperdine. In eight innings Fields allowed one run, four hits and struck out five. At one point he retired 11 straight batters.
Kubec honored
Redshirt freshman Kelly Kubec was named Monday to the D1CollegeWrestling.net All-Freshman Team at 133 pounds.
In his first season competing at Oregon State University, Kubec placed second in the Pac-10 championships. He advanced to the NCAA tournament, but did not place.
Kubec, a three-time state champion at Lake Stevens High School, finished the season with a 20-10 record.
