First throw is best for Jones at Eason Invite
Cascade thrower Brittany Jones wins discus competition on her first toss
By Mike Cane Herald Writer
SNOHOMISH -- Usually Brittany Jones starts slowly and gets better as a competition goes on. But on Saturday she reversed that trend and enjoyed a huge payoff.
Jones, a senior thrower from Cascade High School, launched her best discus toss of the day on her first attempt and won the event during the Larry Eason Invitational track and field meet at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Her winning throw traveled a season-best distance of 135 feet, 9 inches. It was a landmark achievement for Jones.
"It's the first invite (event) I've ever won. I'll always remember it," she said.
Earlier in the day at the 20th Eason Invite, Jones placed third in the shot put with a throw of 35-5. Then in the discus Jones immediately showed she is capable of a strong start, despite her history.
"I usually do really horrible my first few throws," Jones said, "and then I do pretty good after that."
The key this time, she said, was drinking lots of water and relaxing. Cascade assistant coach Chris Crockett helped with the latter part. "Coach (Crockett) told me to take two deep breaths before I throw, so I did that."
The result was thrilling for Jones, who last year placed third in the shot put and fourth in the discus at the Class 4A state meet.
After getting canceled in 2008 because of frigid, snowy conditions, the Eason went smoothly in its return. About 1,200 athletes from 60 schools participated. The runaway girls team champion was Olympia (82 points); runnerup Sehome scored 50.5.
The female athletes of the meet were Franklin Pierce's Germe Poston (track) and Olympia's Emily Walters (field). Poston won the 100-meter dash in 12.12 seconds and the 200 (25.25); Walters finished second in the long jump (16 feet, 10 inches) and the triple jump (35-6.75).
The only other first-place girls finish by a local school was Snohomish's victory in the first race of the day, the distance medley relay. The unusual event consists of four legs (1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600) which were completed by Panthers teammates Valerie Massie, Shelby Mills, Maria Ujifusa and Kristi Fairbanks. Snohomish's winning time of 12:58.5 was nearly 3 seconds faster than Skyview (13:01.44).
"It was nice (because) they're all seniors," Snohomish assistant coach David LeWarne said, "and they've put a lot into the program here at the school. It's a nice way for them to start towards wrapping up their high school careers."
It was probably the only medley relay the Snohomish girls will run all season, LeWarne said. They made the most of it.
"They've all had solid seasons," said LeWarne, "and are continuing to really build on it."
In individual action, Snohomish's Mills placed third in the 3,200 (11:22.94), well behind the winner, Redmond's Sarah Lord (10:53.78).
Other top local female performers were Olivia Thomas of King's (second in 800, fifth in 1,600), Kamiak's Emily Anderberg (third in discus), South Whidbey's Cayla Calderwood (fourth in triple jump, fifth in long jump) and Edmonds-Woodway's 800 relay (third).
