Harsh words for Carole King

Republican lawmakers fighting a bill that would protect wilderness in five states, including Washington, had harsh words Tuesday for the measure's highest-profile supporter: singer-songwriter and Idaho resident Carole King.
In addition to branding her a tree-hugger who wants to lock up valuable natural resources, the GOP slammed King for including two versions of the annoying "Smackwater Jack" on the CD reissue of "Tapestry."
Oh say, can you sing: The Everett AquaSox will hold tryouts this month for folks who want to sing the national anthem before baseball games this summer (Page E1).
Obviously, the Sox would love to find a singer who's a Beyonce at the 2004 Super Bowl. But we predict they're more likely to wind up with a whole bunch of Roseanne Barrs at that baseball game in 1990 -- minus the spitting and cup-adjustment action, let's hope.
Farewell: Dom DeLuise, comic character actor, avid chef and even more avid eater, has died.
Tonight, let's eat an entire platter of spaghetti carbonara in his honor.
