Hickle, Asche score first season wins at Grays Harbor

ELMA, Wash. -- It took until almost the bewitching hour before Zack Simpson took the final checkered flag of the night at 11:50 Saturday night. Numerous red flags, three in the Midgets and one in the Sprints plus some extra track preparation before the races began all contributed to the late night.

JJ Hickle, Quilcene and Kris Asche, Shelton each picked up their first feature wins of the season. Hickle in the 25-lap “360 Sprints” feature and Asche in the 24-lap time shortened “Modifieds” main event.

Jonathan Jorgenson, Auburn, Zack Simpson, Hoquiam and the driving team of Brian Crawford/Aaron Hurd, Aberdeen all made it two wins in a row. Jorgenson in the “Midgets”, Simpson in the “Hobby Stocks” and Crawford/Hurd in the “Cruisers.

Sprints

It took Hickle 14-laps to come from seventh place at the start of the race to lead, and once in front he wasn’t about to give it up.

Shawn Rice, set the early pace, followed by former track champion Glenn Borden Jr, TJ Hartman, opening night winner Jared Peterson, and defending track champion Jay Cole.

Both Hartman and Peterson exited the race early with mechanical problems, Peterson on lap-7 and Hartman a lap later.

Logan Forlyr brought out the red flag on lap-7 when he took a violent flip gin turn-2. Forlyr was checked out by track safety officials and was not transported to a medical facility.

Hickle passed Borden Jr. for second on lap-13 and Rice 2-laps later.

Rice was done for the night when he had mechanical problems on lap-16.

Jay Cole got by Borden for second in the later stages of the race, JJ Dishneau nabbed fourth and Steve Vague rounded out the top five.

Midgets

It took Jorgenson 24-laps to finally get by early race leader Gaylon Stewart in the 25-lap feature.

Stewart had the pole position at the start and used it to his advantage, followed by Jorgenson, Todd Hartman, Brandon Daniel and Tony Carabello.

After Seth Hespe entered the top five on lap-7 things remained status-quo until Lee St Paul put Hespe back a spot on lap-16.

Hartman brought out the red flag on lap-20 when he got sideways going into turn-2 and flipped. Hartman also was checked out by track safety officials and was not transported to a medical facility.

Earlier in the evening Bailey Studer flipped her car during time trails and Zak DeBakker flipped his car in heat-1. DeBakker was transported to McCleary hospital with neck pain and Studer had a case of hurt feelings.

Jorgenson took over the lead in turn-4 on the next to the last lap when he and Stewart brushed each other.

Jorgenson was able to hold the field off to the finish; Brandon Daniel nabbed the second spot on the final lap, Hespe got fourth and Carabello fifth.

Modifieds

It was a duel between a pair of Shelton drivers, with Scott Miller taking the early lead, Asche grabbing the top spot on lap-11, holding onto it for the next 5-laps.

The two traded places 4 times in the next five laps before Asche finally took the lead for good with 5-laps left in the contest.

Miller had tie-rod problems in the later stages of the race with his left front wheel almost at a 45 degree angle to the rest of the car, but he hung in there until the final lap when David Wolfard and Josh Muller got by him while Shawn Dorie grabbed fifth place.

Hobby Stocks

It doesn’t matter where Zack Simpson starts the race, you will usually find him at the front of the pack early in the race. Simpson had to start the race from the fourth row because of problems during time trails.

Tom Izzi was the leader from the pole, but Simpson moved from seventh to second in just one lap.

Simpson assumed his customary place at the front on lap-5 and it was all over but the shouting in the 20-lap feature.

Brandon Riehl moved into second spot past Brandon Biggs on lap-9, followed by Keith Knowlton and Eddie Blood.

The front four remained the same the rest of the race while Dan Cinqualbres got by Izzi for fifth on lap-13.

Cruisers

Crawford/Hurd took the lead on lap-3 and were never really challenged the rest of the way. The Cruiser feature race was the only main of the night to only have one caution, and that was for debris on the track.

Brad Crawford/Mike Crawford followed Crawford/Hurd, Tad Smith/Sparkin Heimer were third, JD Boling/Ted Warner fourth and Dana Austin/James Hinckley fifth early in the race.

Boling/Warner finished second, Smith/Heimer third, Crawford/Hurd dropped to fourth and Austin/Hinckley held onto the fifth spot at the finish.

Next Saturday night will feature the Sprints, Modifieds, Hobby Stocks and Hornets for Armed Forces Day at the track. Gates open at 4:30 with racing around 7:00.
