The Car Club Challenge Association held its season-opening drag racing event on Friday, May 15 at Pacific Raceways in Kent. Here's a corrected recap:
Mopar Drag Team wins the season opener
The new CCCA race team, Mopar Drag Team is making waves in its first season of competition. Driver Steve Neel plows through the field of Fords, Chevys and Pontiacs to take home the winner’s trophy in his 2006 Dodge Magnum.
With great weather at Pacific Raceways, the only clouds in the air came from tire smoke.
The evening started off with two FDT racers out of it. Doug Anderson of Monroe was not happy when going through tech, it was discovered that his safety constraints were 15 days expired. It is one of those things that can slip your mind very easy. The other racer, Garvie Cooper of Arlington got a cracked windshield when fellow FDT member Dave Carman was in the burnout box and through a small rock or debris that hit and cracked Garive’s windshield.
Team after team went out of competition, leaving the semi-finals with two Ford Drag Team cars, Dave Carman and Al Cooley and one Mopar Drag Team car, Steve Neel and Corey Mcgleno’s Pontiac Grand Prix. When the round was over, it was a Mopar – Ford match-up.
In his first year of CCCA competition, Steve Neel treed Dave Carman with a.043 vs Carman's .110. With Neel running almost a perfect dial, of 12.682 on a 12.680 dial.
Carman knew that he had to lean hard on his 69 Mach 1 to try to catch Neel, but couldn’t get it done. After the race, Carman, known for his good sportsmanship, said that Neel simply outraced him. Carman said, that if a guy cuts a good light and runs that close to his dial, he deserves to be holding the winner’s trophy.
After three races at Bremerton and one race at Pacific, the Ford Drag Team is holding a lead, with the Pacific N.W. Camaro Club in second place, and the new Mopar Team on their heels, pulling into 3rd place.
Final rounds
Semi-finals: FDT member Dave Carmen vs. Grand prix member Corey Mcgleno; Carmen wins
FDT Member Al Cooley vs. Mopar drag team member Steve Neel; Neel wins
Finals: Carmen (dial 10.49) vs. Neel (dial 12.68). Neel wins (12.682, .043 R/T to 10.49, .110 R/T)
