Chris Gregoire.   ADVERTISEMENT   CONTACT THE HERALD Robert Frank, City Editor frank@heraldnet.com   Published: Thursday, May 21, 2009 Applause HONORS Fire district officers complete training Lieutenants Rick Peters and Justyn Shevlin from Snohomish County Fire District 7 were two of seven instructors who recently expanded their leadership talents while assisting new recruits with firefighting skills at the Washington State Fire Academy in North Bend. At a graduation ceremony, Peters and Shevlin were recognized for their hard work and dedication as instructors. Peters received an award that was the first of its kind: Company Officer of the First-Due Truck Company. This award recognizes the company officer who would be the best fit on the first arriving truck company. Brier police earn recognition, cake In recognition of Police Week in May, Washelli's Abbey View Memorial Park made a presentation at Brier City Hall. Dale Amundsen, Washelli community relations coordinator and a former law enforcement chaplain, brought cake and made a presentation to Chief Donald Lane. The presentation included a letter thanking the Brier Police Department staff for their service. National Police Week was established by proclamation of President John Kennedy in 1962. It is a time when the work of law enforcement is recognized by honoring the memory of the officers, deputies, agents and rangers. VOLUNTEERS Sisters serve as pages in Olympia Caitlin Pennington and her sister, Elizabeth Pennington, both of Mukilteo, recently served as honorary pages for the House of Representatives during the recent legislative session. Honorary pages serve one day assisting House pages with their tasks. Caitlin is a fifth-grader and Elizabeth is a sixth-grader. The sisters are home-schooled. Jordan Pennington recently served as a House of Representative page for Rep. Marko Liias of the 21st District. House pages work for one week and assist the representatives in delivering communications between members during the session. Jordan is a 10th-grade, home-schooled student. WINNERS Youth art festival poster winners Reanne Lee, a 10th-grade student at Stanwood High School, is the first-place winner of the 11th annual Youth Art Festival Poster Contest. Reanne won $100 and her poster will be the advertising piece for the Youth Arts Festival. The Stanwood Camano Community Resource Center announced the winners, including Kelsey Dingman, an 11th-grade student at Stanwood High School who took second place in the competition for her colored-pencil design of various art forms. Kelsey won $50. Erling Anderson, a fifth-grade Anderson Homeschool student, was awarded $25 for third place for his painting featuring the arts. The Youth Arts Festival is an activity sponsored by the Stanwood Camano Community Resource Center. Assistance League president honored Assistance League President Wendy Taylor was among 53 volunteers from around the state of Washington who received the Governor's 2009 Volunteer Service Awards. The event was hosted by the Washington Commission for National and Community Service in Olympia. Honorees were also invited to the Seattle Mariners game the following evening for the first Salute to Volunteers Night at Safeco Field. Taylor has been a member of Assistance League since 1995. Assistance League is an all-volunteer organization with 325 members. During this past year, members and community volunteers have donated more than 40,000 service hours to philanthropic programs, fundraising activities and administrative duties.
