Front Porch: County furlough hours start today

Much of the Snohomish County government is scheduled to shut down early today and remain closed Friday.

Service desks at the offices of the auditor, assessor and treasurer, which occupy most of the first floor at the county administration buildings, plan to stop taking customers at 3:30 p.m. today.

They will remain closed Friday, the first of six union-negotiated furlough days throughout the year. They have been closing daily from noon to 1 p.m.

Some departments expect to keep working.

Clerk's office staff is scheduled to remain for normal hours, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will answer phones from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The planning department is scheduled to close to the public today as part of a new schedule. On Friday it expects to reopen from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
