    PREP ROUNDUP: Softball/Golf/Tennis

LYNDEN -- "We're going to state!" Granite Falls head coach Candi Reeves screamed into the phone Wednesday night.

Granite Falls defeated Blaine 3-0 in the opener, and defeated Burlington-Edison 3-2 in dramatic fashion to advance to the 2A District 1 softball championship game at 6 p.m. Friday against Anacortes at Bender Fields.

Granite Falls' starting pitcher Alyssa Arndt allowed just four hits in the two games, striking out 15 in the first game and eight in the second, improving her and the Tigers' record to 19-2 overall.

Shelby Spencer drove in Halem Brennan to give Granite Falls a one-run lead in the top of the seventh. It was then Arndt's turn to respond, and she shut the door.

"She struck out the meat of the order, that was amazing," Reeves said. "We didn't dominate like we would like to, but Alyssa did an outstanding job with all the strikeouts."

The Wildcats easily handled Mt. Baker in the first game 13-3, but ran into Anacortes in game two, losing 6-5 and will need to win its next game to guarantee a berth to state.

Murphy trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, and got two runs to close it to a one-run game. With two runners on, Murphy hit a groundout, ending the chance for a rematch of the Cascade Conference championship between the Wildcats and Granite Falls for the 2A District 1 championship. Amber Manuel had doubles in each game to lead Murphy.

Glacier Peak's Catherine Jorgensen, who fell to Mills 6-1, 6-2 in the final, earned the second seed to state by virtue of her semifinal win over consolation winner Josie Dow of Meadowdale. The top-seeded doubles team of Belinda Pan and Lauren Olson of Shorecrest won in three sets over Lianne Fijalka and Sara Portesan of Meadowdale in the doubles final. Fijalka and Portesan captured the district's second state berth with a straight sets win over Lauren Barnet and Megan Stransky of Mt. Vernon in the second-place match.
