Jason Solwold all smiles after winning both 360 and 410 Main events in John Carroll Classic

My final local racing update for today (we're already two crashes into the Indy 500 as I type this ... that's got to be tough, spending an entire month working up for a race and then getting knocked out in the first few laps.)

Congrats to Jason Sowold who proves the point that wins come in bunches.

Solwold Wins John Carroll Classic in 410 and 360

Skagit Speedway Media - 5/23/09

ALGER, Wash. -- Jason Solwold broke through for the first time in 2009 in a BIG fashion at Skagit Speedway, winning both the Associated Asphalt 410 and Budweiser 360 features. The John Carroll Classic presented by I.R.I. is run every year on Memorial Day weekend for a larger purse, and Solwold picked a good weekend to get his race programs online. In the Associated Asphalt 410s, Solwold methodically ran down race leader Nick Engberg, then used a lap 12 restart to power around the high side to take the lead and eventual win in the Shark Racing Engines #73 Maxim. Travis Rutz came home second in the Rudeen Racing #26 Maxim. Third was Colton Heath in the Sanford Tire #5x XXX. Jesse Whitney set quick time in his Precise Machining #88 Eagle. Heat race wins went to Kevin Smith in his Skagit Powdercoating #75 XXX and Eric Fisher in his J&R Paving #59 XXX.

Solwold set the tone for his night early by blasting by race leader Danielle Huson on the outside of corner four on lap six to take the lead and eventual win in the Budweiser 360 division. Piloting the C&S Construction #51 Maxim, Solwold would hold off a late race charge by second place finisher Brock Lemley in the Haling Seafood #40 XXX to score his first triumph of 2009. Huson hung on for third in her Shark Racing Engines #73 Rocket. Brian Kirkpatrick was quick time in the K&B Racing #5k XXX. Heat wins went to Kelsey Carpenter in the Dri-Eaz #79k XXX, Shane Broers in the Firedown Graphics #11 XXX and Huson.

Devin Barnes went wire-to-wire in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprint division to score his first career main win. After weeks of playing the bridesmaid to other driver's brides, Barnes put it all together in the Ken's Redmond Autobody #22 XXX, leading all 20 laps of the main without ever sustaining a serious challenge. Second was Michael Bollinger in the Sunworks Tanning #73 Maxim with third going to Matt Van Der Sys in the Timber Trax #30 XXX. Heat race wins went to Lyle Woods in the K&B Racing #12 Becker and Bollinger.

Much like Barnes, Freddie Vela was tired of taking home runner ups...and just like Barnes, he put it all together to score his first career win in the Outlaw Hornets, leading every lap of the main which was shortened due to three red flags. Second went to Don Ward, third to Tyler Ketchum. Heats were won by Ben Gunderson and Jerry Birdsey Jr.

Join us next week for round seven of the Foothills Toyota Tundra Racing Series next week at Skagit Speedway when all four classes will once again be in action. Gates open at 530p with racing slated to begin at 7pm. For ticket information, please visit www.skagitspeedway.com
