Solwold wins again at Grays Harbor

Posted at 4:52 pm by Scott Whitmore

Jason Solwold is on a tear, it would seem. A two-time winner on Saturday, he added to more hardware on Sunday at Gray's Harbor Raceway. Here's the ASCS Northwest Region's recap:Shawn Miller, Elma, Wash. (May 24)

The wily veteran struck again.

Jason Solwold, a longtime sprint car ace in the Northwest, outsmarted the counterparts half his age on a brisk Sunday evening at Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Wash.

Solwold, a 33-year-old journeyman from nearby Burlington, Wash., claimed the 30-lap American Sprint Car Series Northwest Region race -- his second in as many seasons and third feature win in approximately 24 hours.

"As the older I get, the more patient I get," said Solwold, who won the 410 and 360 features Saturday night at Skagit Speedway in his hometown.

"You've got to force the issue on the start. Once we kinda got strung out there a little bit, I just kinda settled down and just watched for mistakes."

Solwold, who won a Northwest Region race last September, started the feature in 11th and quickly worked his way through traffic. He was fifth in the first five laps and by lap 19, Solwold was within striking distance of leader Jared Peterson -- a 17 year old from Stanwood, Wash.

"I think Jason was real fast, but he was also being really smart," said 20-year-old Jared Ridge, who finished third.

One lap later, Solwold dove to the bottom in turn one to grab the lead from Peterson, who struggled to stay close.

"I knew that he was going to be tough to get back by," said Peterson, who was the polesitter. "He's a really good driver, especially on slick tracks."

Peterson finished a career-best second in an ASCS event.

The race was slowed by seven cautions, including the final one for a spin by J.J. Hickle with five laps remaining. Because of the lengthy feature, the race was then red flagged because of fuel concerns.

While that tested the drivers? patience, the track was just as tough to tame.

Peterson hugged the bottom groove most of the race, while Ridge rode the cushion about two-thirds up the track.

Although they drove different lanes, both agreed they overdrove their cars at times, a mistake that the veteran capitalized on.

"I just kinda stayed out of trouble," said Solwold, who was the Hard Charger for passing 10 cars. "A couple guys that were in front of me -- were loose getting off the turns. They were probably just a little overexcited. They?ll be passing me here one of these days."

Jay Cole of Shelton, Wash., placed fourth and Bellingham, Wash., resident Brock Lemley rounded out the top five.

Shawn Rice, the ASCS winner on Saturday night at Grays Harbor Raceway, was sixth and the current Northwest Region points leader, Steven Tiner, finished seventh.
