The view from OKC: Carbonatto's diary

“Since we got back late Sunday night, the Embassy Suites was kind enough to extend breakfast until 11 a.m. Monday so the girls could sleep in. They deserved it. They played hard Sunday.

“We had a short workout at noon, then they studied a little bit. After being on the road for a few weeks, it’s been hard for them to keep up with their studies. A few have e-mailed professors asking for extensions on term papers, and the professors have been very understanding.

“All in all, the girls were pretty chill. We, the coaches, made up a highlight video for them to watch before the game. Going into the Florida game, we were one of only three teams to beat the Gators all year; we did it at the Palm Springs tournament. Now we’ve done it twice.

“After the video, we set up a plan to attack. We’re a great-hitting team, so we wanted to keep doing that. We didn’t want to scare them with: ‘This pitcher’s really good.’ We just told them to keep doing what they’ve been doing, and they executed it perfectly. We broke it open and owned the game.

“Hitting is contagious. Once one person does it, it just keeps going. Ashley Charters, our leadoff hitter, was the key. Once your leadoff hitter gets on, that makes it easier for everyone else.

“After the game, we let them enjoy it. But it’s not like they were on this incredible high after a great finish. We beat Florida pretty soundly, so the girls were pretty low-key.

“On Tuesday, I’m sure we’ll have to keep them focused on the now. Monday’s game means nothing now. We know we’re a better team, and we know we can beat them. It’s just a matter of doing it one more time.”
