NCAA champion Washington softball team returns home

SEATTLE -- The University of Washington softball team has returned to Seattle with the national championship.

Coach Heather Tarr held up the NCAA trophy to about 200 fans who greeted the team Wednesday at Sea-Tac Airport with cheers and music from members of the marching band.

The Huskies beat Florida 3-2 Tuesday night at Oklahoma City to claim their first title at the Women's College World Series. It capped a three-week postseason road trip.

The team will be celebrated at Friday's Mariners game at Safeco Field where national-player-of the-year and world series MVP Danielle Lawrie will throw out the first pitch.

The team also plans a celebration with fans at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Don James Center on campus.
