Clement a hit at DH
While a bum knee has kept him from catching, the Class AAA prospect has flourished with his bat for the Tacoma Rainiers
By Kirby Arnold Herald Writer
Still unable to catch because of his troublesome left knee, Jeff Clement has continued to hit for the Class AAA Tacoma Rainiers.
Clement, who has resisted any notion that he be anything but a catcher, has been the Rainiers' DH since early May and has flourished. He went into Tuesday night's game at Colorado Springs with a 20-game hitting streak after a three-hit game Monday that pushed his season average to .314.
Clement has seven home runs and 33 runs batted in, and his 17 doubles tie him for second place in the Pacific Coast League. He has 12 doubles and a .429 average during the 20-game streak.
The Rainiers, 27-24 and third in the PCL Pacific North Division, were winning with offense. While the pitching staff ERA of 4.98 was 13th among the 16 teams, their .291 team batting average and .366 on-base percentage were second in the PCL and their 118 doubles led the league.
Chris Shelton, who is playing primarily at third base, has a .324 average with six homers and 39 RBI. First baseman Mike Carp was batting .302 with nine homers and 26 RBI, and his 33 walks were tied for third in the PCL.
Mike Morse, who has played a near-equal amount of games at second, third and shortstop, had a .320 average with six homers and 41 RBI (tied for fifth in the league). Outfielder Michael Saunders had a .361 average in 108 at-bats and a 15-game hitting streak.
Closer Randy Messenger had nine saves, fifth in the PCL, and a 1.57 ERA. Starters Gaby Hernandez, Andrew Baldwin and Chris Seddon each were 3-3 and none had an ERA lower than Baldwin's 4.95.
