Wesco South seniors sweep the North in baseball doubleheader
By Mark Nelson Herald Writer
SNOHOMISH -- The state baseball tournaments concluded last weekend, but there is still plenty to accomplish for area players.
The Western Conference's top seniors descended upon Snohomish High School's Earl Torgeson Field Tuesday afternoon for the Wesco 4A/3A Senior All-Star game.
Meadowdale's Chase Anselment, a University of Washington signee, belted two home runs to help lead the Wesco South team to a 13-2 and 5-4 two-game sweep over the Wesco North.
Anselment was one of ten Wesco seniors nominated for All-State series consideration; the All-State series takes place June 13-14 at Parker Field in Yakima.
Anselment batted 3-for-4 with a walk, two home runs, a double and seven RBI in two games for the victorious South squad.
"I've played with him and against him," Snohomish's Brian Wolfe, another UW signee, said. "He's a great hitter. Hopefully, he'll come to UW next year if he doesn't go too high in the draft."
Shorecrest's James Robbins batted 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the first game and Snohomish's Max Foster hit a two-run home run for the North. Both players were nominated for the All-State series.
Along with Anselment, Robbins and Foster, the rest of the nominees are: John Mann (Lynnwood), Bobby LeCount (Shorewood), Brian Wolfe (Snohomish), Bubba Robbins (Snohomish), Branden Thomas (Stanwood), Devin Peterson (Marysville-Pilchuck) and Tyler Holm (M-P).
"I'm excited," Foster said of the nomination. "I'm not positive I'm going, but they said it's a possibility. I want to play against the best, it would be an honor to go."
"I'm really honored to be nominated for that because that's a big deal," Wolfe said. "And hopefully I'll get selected to go down there and hopefully some of these guys will be on the team."
Due to a lack of players on the South team, Marysville-Pilchuck's four seniors switched to the South side in the first contest. In the second game, M-P went back to the North and a number of Snohomish players moved to the South.
The games provided a chance for opponents to meet some new faces in the dugout.
"It's a lot of fun," Wolfe said. "Everybody out here is good. It's just a fun thing to do.
"I have friends that I know from both teams, so it's fun to play both ways."
In the second inning of the final game, Snohomish's Bryce Meinhold (pitching for the North) faced five of his Panthers teammates in a row. He struck out the first two before walking Wolfe and giving up an RBI double to Foster. He struck out Bubba Robbins to end the inning.
M-P's Tyler Holm lifted a two-run home run to right-center field in the fifth inning of the second game and the North added two more runs in the six before Stanwood's Walter Thomas grounded out to end the game.
"It's a cool feeling," Foster said of playing with all the different seniors. "It's really good, there's a lot of D-1 players, lots of talent."
