Community Extra: Opportunities Volunteer: Assist vulnerable adultsAdults living in nursing homes, assisted-living facilities and adult family homes throughout Snohomish County are in need of community help. More than 2,500 people lack a volunteer ombudsman who can serve as an advocate, educator, investigator and problem-solver on their behalf. Volunteer ombudsmen come from all walks of life, but all have a desire to help older adults and people with disabilities. The Snohomish County Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program plans to offer a four-day training session in Lynnwood on July 15, 16, 21 and 22 for people interested in becoming volunteers. Those who complete the training are asked to help four hours a week by visiting assigned long-term care facilities. Expenses can be reimbursed. Donate: Drill team needs sale items The Edmonds-Woodway High School Drill Team has scheduled a garage sale set for 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the high school, 7600 212th St. SW. Proceeds go to send the drill team to a camp this summer at the University of Puget Sound. People who want to donate gently used items to the sale may do so by dropping off the items from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the south end of the school near the gym. Join: Discover 4-H youth programs Washington State University's Snohomish County Extension plans to offer an introduction to 4-H youth programs. The event is set for 7 p.m. June 22 at the WSU Extension office, 600 128th St. SE. 4-H has farm animal projects, as well as those that deal with photography, computers, creative arts, all-terrain vehicles, archery and pets. More info: 425-357-6044. Volunteer: Teens sought to advise Arlington library Teens are asked to share their ideas for library programs and improvements at the Arlington Library. Volunteer hours for school credit are offered and snacks are provided at meetings. The advisory group is scheduled to meet this summer at 3 p.m. Tuesday, and at the same time on July 7 and Aug. 11 at the library, 135 N. Washington Ave., Arlington. More info: 360-435-3033. Join: Everett Eagles seek new members Everett Fraternal Order of Eagles plans to dedicate the civic group's new Disaster Relief Trailer and host a membership drive at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Everett Aerie, 1216 Broadway. The Disaster Relief Trailer was donated by a member after he and his wife decided to close their trucking business. The Everett Aerie began in 1899 and has grown to more than 800 members from the local community. The Everett Auxiliary, with more than 600 members, was founded in the community in 1928. The Everett Eagles group donates more than $15,000 annually to local and national nonprofit organizations through its People Helping People program. More info: 425-760-5101. |
