Front Porch: Skykomish turns 100

Skykomish celebrates its centennial Friday, Saturday and Sunday with many events, including a parade, open-air market and social gatherings.

An opening ceremony is planned for 1 p.m. Friday at the Skykomish School, 105 Sixth St. N., followed by cake and coffee at the Community Center and wine and cheese at the museum. Most of the events take place Saturday, including a parade planned for noon through the center of town.

Sunday, there'll be music, softball and kids games at the ballpark beginning at 11 a.m.

For more information, call 360-677-2388 or go online for a complete schedule of events at www.town.skykomish.wa.us.

Attract critters and birds: Washington State University Snohomish County Extension is offering a free Healthy Forests for Fish and Wildlife workshop for small woodland owners. The workshop is planned for 6 p.m. Thursday at Loyal Heights Community Club, 4305 269th Place NE, Arlington.

This class will teach forest landowners practical steps to attract more wildlife to their property. Register by calling 425-357-6017.

Testing day for HIV: June 27 is National HIV Testing Day. More than 250,000 Americans living with HIV don't know they have it.

For more information about several testing sites in Snohomish County, visit www.hivtest.org.

Every 9 ½ minutes, it is estimated that someone in the United States is infected with HIV, human immunodeficiency virus. HIV is the virus that can cause AIDS. It is spread through body fluids, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids and breast milk.

There is no cure for HIV-AIDS, but there is treatment.
